More progress on the GS.

The GS is taking on a new form now. I love it. Tanabe DF springs are on and it's just how I wanted. Not too stiff for daily cruising to work, but not too soft for quick maneuvers. I'd rather have a grip setup that actually works then a half-rediculous drifting hardcore setup on a car that isn't going to see tracktime. This is the only setup I feel fine with for winter use, and Ottawa has some of the worst roads in the universe. Also did a ridiculously overkill oilspray rustproofing job on it.

I seriously think the R33 wheels look cool. Yeah a bit small, but with chunky 255/40 tires they are mighty!

Also scored a silver GS400 AutoArt diecast the other day. I had to laugh when I realized it's low too haha, even Autoart knew the car should be lower.

winter setup. it works great considering how wide they are. they don't look big in the pictures, but they are 255/40's lol. not an ideal snowtire for a car.

One of the only cars I ever wanted when it was new.

Reminds me a lot of the IS300, barely feels heavier to me. The throttle feels slower then the IS300 throttle (electronic throttle delay)

Short term: Snow tires and a Blitz throttle control unit

Long term: Light upgraded suspension, nice 18" proper wheels. I'm not going VIP with this, I've posted a silver Wald GS before that got my attention for being more OEMish, I'd like to keep all the versatility of a stock car for year round use, but tighten up the ride and handling. Since I'm not planning on changing the bodywork I think carefully selected 18" wheels are a good medium for street use and long roadtrips.

Bottom line, I don't want to build myself a racecar. because not racecar.

I'm not much of a VIP guy, not my thing, that's why this car has my attention! No tint! chrome has been turned down to black chrome, and the wheels aren't just all chrome and tucking.

This is what I think when I think about classy. Overdone, over cambered, over tucked VIP cars are gaudy in my opionion. This car is seriously awesome to me.

Went out to Shannonville today to see what was good at the DriftOps X CoolKidsClub VIP Driver Appreciation Day.

Mats B and Matt B were there killing it. Dualling single turbo 500+hp 1J'z is real art for the ears.

I've been really doing a lot lately, but summer also makes me do things like drink, watch movies and try to actually chill a bit. Decided to put in a lot of work but balance it with the good weather.

anyway, less QQ more Pew Pew.. here's some shots of junk that happened lately:

Quick testing of the new ARK MFD. such a nice little thing for swap projects. wish this existed years ago for this cheap (compared to buying all the gauges it replaces). It's on test mode in the pic. when i wired in the R154 digital sender directly to it it already picked up a great signal and started to work perfect right away, all I have to do is play with the number of pulses and even tweak it for % of tire size differences and it will be super accurate. too cool, something that actually isn't a pain to work with for once. too bad it didn't take 0-5v wideband signals from a controller or have the option to hook an extra pressure signal up to the FPR.

In the pic above from left to right (fuel %, wideband, tach, ark mfd) red button is tach peak recall and functions.

This new cluster will be tinted black so you will really not see the carbon/kevlar so well, just the illumination. going to leave the ARK MFD to monitor 8 functions, so i won't need to access it, plus it'll be secure in there behind the plastic sheet, and also stay relatively clean.

original dash was like tach/speedo/temp/fuel and tipical warning lights?

the new cluster is basically:

Boost with peak warning
Water temp with peak warning
Oil temp with peak warning
Oil pressure with low warning

and best for last a digital speedometer driven from the digital toyota transmission sensor.

I'm pretty proud of this thing. beats all the last attempts at building a dash by 100X once it's in the car, will be happy to make a video of how it looks/works. lets me keep the whole dash looking stock and clean, and when the key is off, you probably won't even see the stuff crammed into the cluster behind the tint. I could have bought the new ARK MFD2 but it was based on OBDII so it would be a gamble that it might not work with the tipical wiring splice method. plus i can update the visual appearance to the new MFD2 software anytime though a usb port.

S9 aero came in, starting to mock up that, trimming stuff, playing with the fit. Those yellow fog lights are probably useless in fog so they are going to take on the role of DTRL's. yeah, HID DTRL's baby.. lol.

Used a big washer to install the URAS jzx81 tie rods to prevent travel. It won't kill hte rack seals if it won't go in there, and the XM knuckles will be more than enough with the 88 X7 quick rack.

Trying to get rid of massive amounts of mosquitos in the shop. this works great. lol.

B-Quiet. Put in a full 50 sq. ft. roll in there all like factory but at least half the weight.

new 18" wheels came in. they are getting painted. hate the matte black with silver accents blehh. needs more pearl light grey metallic. yeah, clearcoat came out pebbley, needs 1200 grit and a polish before that gets shiny, but there is tons of clear on the car so it'll look great once it's buffed.

a heater core! been a while since one of those has been in there. i even found a perfect complete jzx81 heater hose setup on my spare 1j. super handy.

reclocked the turbo correctly. no more oiling worries.

car is slowly making it's transition to softcore daily cruiser. i want this car to be able to go on long roadtrips without one problem. same concept as my klze protege that took me to florida last winter. no scetchy stuff, just proven goodness all around. including the factory seats for long seat time comfort. i can have my recaro spg ready to bolt in for track duty anytime i want.

So i was all ready to start with the 2-tone paint. then decided the black would show too many of the little imperfections and junk in my bodywork. so i mixed the black and grey jzx81 colors together to make my own dark grey. I call it DeathBySedan grey, but it's just a dark grey metallic. it's toyota code 202 black and 180 flint grey mixed 50/50.

Can't wait for aero, I saved a lot of paint for that.

I also pulled off this stunt where i masked the chrome door trim off for the color layer, then peeled that off and clearcoated the chrome so it would shine like when it gets wet, all the time. it worked awesome.

3495 mile roadtrip? no problem!

Went on a nice little roadtrip from Ottawa down to Cape Coral, FL in the Protege.

The car was flawless, tons of hwy power, managed to get 29.5mpg on average too!

Total distance was 3495miles and 60hours of driving. The only problem I found was the car is so light that it gets pushed around more than usual near trucks and big wind gusts. Also, my ankle was missing cruise control.

I can't believe how great this car has been. I always thought swapped cars would always be a constant pain and never feel like they could make a long trip. I feel different about my own swapping abilities now.

Stopped at Summit Racing in Ga for some IS300 ARP wheel bolts for the Cressta. Also dropped by Enjuku to grab a Ross Tuffbond 1J crank pulley, locking aerocatch, muteki chrome steel open lugs, and a 17x9.5 MB battle to match the offset of my SSR SP1 to form a nasty pair for the rear.

New Year

yep, the Protege is still kickin' been spot-on since it was put together. had a little leak at the cv axle on the trans, just needed a new seal. Car has been getting around 27mpg and pulls hard. I put a proper 3" aluminum tube and coupler on the intake going to the filter and now the air going through the MAF seems to be more stable. I can actually feel the two torque pulses through the powerband due the the variable intake runner valves VRIS system. had a fun run against a mazdaspeed3 on the hwy, got the thumbs up too lol. probably more like ouch that old BG just took me down hahaha.

Got a working stereo, gps mount and new dunlop graspic DS-3 snowtires on the factory MX3 enkei wheels. it's pretty blah, but perfectly stealth. little exhaust note is the only real giveaway. the sound from the Thrush muffler and mandrel 2.5" system coming from the headers off the DOHC V6 doesn't exactly say stock. The stock MX3 springs are actually really beefy, much more beefy than the Sprint springs i had on the protege before. even though the car sits high (which is fine for snow) it handles great and takes potholes and road junk like a champ. based on experience so far, i'm sure this car will easily run out of gearing at 240km/h.

wow, so busy i couldn't even find time to update my progress.

broke some semi-important stuff like fan relays but the car is running. sounds insane through open headers, and even better, actually running.

the mx3 brakes are a little bit bigger.

should be able to finish it up over the weekend, i'm really wasted from sleep loss. :)

super exhaust homebrew. jegs 3" glasspack with a 4" ss tip. couple of mendrel 3" bends and a 3" header flange, plus a flex pipe for kicks. simple, light and loud.

even got the burned tip by torch for giggles.

Slicked on some carbon/kevlar cloth onto the plastic dash frame with a few layers of epoxy. probably a little too shiny. Redid the wiring nice and clean, and put together a nice little fuse panel.

SPA Design tach is classy.
